Partly waterst.; occas. foxed/browned. Binding sl. worn/chafed/discol. Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576), Italian philosopher, physician, mathematician and astrologer. The rare first edition of this complex and extensive philosophical on the benefits of adversity in life (gaining advantage from misfortune), completed around the extremely traumatising event of his son Giovanni Battista being condemned to death for the murder of his mother; his other son (also arrested in the case) died soon after.
