SOLD €900,00

[Shanghai, Hong Kong etc.] Album containing ca. 265 loosely inserted picture postcards

Mostly early 20th cent. but also incl. late 19th cent. cards and some later cards, all but a few stamped and addressed (many to members of the Van Andel family, a number of those cards to or from addresses in Shanghai and Hongkong), all inserted with the address-side visible, the cl. album w. Jugendstil decoration, folio-sized.

Bookblock loosening at upper hinge, edges of upper cover worn. A rich, international collection, especially important for both the many stamps showing dates and places (most of the cards w. 2-5 of those), as well as the paper stamps. Alexander Willem van Andel was manager for the Holland-China Trading Comp. in Shanghai, explaining the many cards sent to or from Shanghai and Hong-Kong (the Van Andel family home-addresses in the Netherlands were in Rotterdam, also includes early cards w. stamp "Waspik" and other sm. Dutch places). Many paper stamps are German, but a number of them have Chinese paper stamps from Hong Kong etc. Also includes stamps from Egypt, Gibraltar, Sweden, The Philippines, U.S.A., Tunisia, Great Britain, Ceylon, Indonesia, The Netherlands, France, "Congo Belge" etc. Most of the cards were originally issued in European countries, but a number of photocards show street scenes in Shanghai, Beijing etc., a few are with Chinese text and stamps only. (total ca. 265 in album)
