Published and edited by Gregg Puchalski in Forest Park, Georgia and Buffalo, NY. 491 was published in 16 issues between 1973 and ca. 1980. This lot contains 10 issues, staplebound, printed b/w in Xerox and offset on various paper sizes. Comprises Vol.1 No.1, No.2 and No.3 (n.d., 1973), 11 x 14 cm, 36/44/28 pp; Nos.5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 (n.d., 1974-1977), 22 x 14 cm, all 8 pp except No.7 (12 pp); No.15 Fall 1978, 36 x 22 cm, 8 pp. No.9 is printed in brown. Some copies with light sunning to edges, generally in very good condition. Rare collection.
Contributions by the San Francisco Bay Area Dadaist scene and the international Mail art network. Artists and collectives include Opal L. Nations, Genesis P. Orridge, Anna Banana, Bill Gaglione, Robin Crozier, Davi Det Hompson, Ray Johnson, Clemente Padin, Klaus Groh, David Zack, Irene Dogmatic, Pat Tavenner, Tom Hosier, Chuck Stake, The Northwest Mounted Valise, Western Dakota Junk Co, Hoo Hoo Archives, Daddaland et al. Added are five Xeroxed inserts for the first three issues, featuring a dadaist questionnaire for an interview with File Magazine, and a drawing titled 'Ray Johnson's Mother's Potato Smasher' by Puchalski.
