[Peter Eckler] New York, 1865. First edition, second issue, specially bound with the separately printed "Sequel to Drum Taps", written in response to the assasination of Abraham Lincoln. Sm. 8vo., 72,(2),24 p. Full brown cloth w. gilt lettering on the front cover. The second issue of 'Drum-Taps' includes the Sequel with eighteen additonal poems, among them When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd and O Captain! My Captain! The latter poem Whitman later claimed to have regretted writing. The Sequel was also published separately and is seldom found together with the main text. Bookplate A.D. Burnell, Ph.D.
