It is unclear to whom the note is addressed; Charcot thanks this person for their letter and expresses the expectation that he may call upon their assistance again in the future. Jean-Martin Charcot was a French neurologist and professor of anatomical pathology, known for his pioneering work on hypnosis and hysteria. He is often regarded as "the father of French neurology". Added: Similar authograph card by Cesare Lombroso, founder of the Italian School of Criminology. Card dated 1894, addressed to a colleague, 6 x 11 cm.
