[Unknown Utrecht edition] Johannis Friderici Böckelmanni JCti Compendium institutionum

Caes. Justiniani, sive Elementa juris civilis in brevem & facilem ordinem redacta, Editio novissima, & omnium emendatissima. (...). Utrecht. Apud Antonium Schouten, 1700, (42),296,(160) p., with engraved title, contemporary vellum, 12mo.

With contemporary owner's name "Joan Eijsing" in pen on outside front casing. Very good copy. Extremely rare: we could not find any other copy of this edition, not even in Picarta! The engraved title bears the address of Antonius Schouten, as does the letter print title, but with a 1694 date. In Picarta only one copy can be found with Schouten's address and a date of 1694, so this is rare as well. Johann Friedrich Böckelman (1632-1681), a German jurist, taught law at the University of Leiden from 1670. His innovative teaching method no longer used the large Corpus juris civilis exclusively, but instead used much shorter summaries. This method was used up to the 19th century. Leiden University still has a Legatum Böckelmannianum stipend for excellent students.
