[Epigrams] Anthologia Graeca

Cum versione Latina Hugonis Grotii, edita ab Hieronymo de Bosch. Ultrajecti, B. Wild & J. Altheer, 1795-1810, 4 vols.

4to., half-vellum, uniformly bound, marbled endpapers, (4 out of 5 vols.), all 4 title pages with illustrated vignette by Reinier Vinkeles, vignette of the first vol. with portrait of Hugo de Groot. Ex-libris L.J.W. Smit. The first 3 vols. contain a miscellany of Greek epigrams and a Latin adaptation by Hugo de Groot. Vol. 4 and 5 contain commentaries on these by Hieronymus de Bosch; vol. 5 (published later) missing. The Greek Anthology contains epigrams by ca. 300 poets and covers over 1200 years. Some of the oldest are by Simonides and Anacreon from the 6th cy BCE. A great number of epigrams are from the hellenistic period - such as epigrams by the famous poets Callimachus and Theocritus – but there are also 82 epigrams by Paulus Silentiarius, a courtier of emperor Justinian I from the 6th cy CE. Fine set. (4 in total)
