Cardboard of casings visible in corners, overall a good copy. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated work about 12 mirrors mankind uses to try and see God, written by Jan David (1543-1613), title page and illustrations by Theodoor Galle (1571-1633). Bound after: Paradisus sponsi et sponsae in Quo: Messis myrrhae et aromatum, ex instrumentis ac mysterijs Passionis Christi colligenda, ut ei commoriamur, et Pancarpium Marianum Septemplici Titulorum serie distinctum: ut in B.Virginis odorem curramus, et Christus formetur in nobis. Auctore P. Ioanne David. Antwerpen, Ex Officina Plantiniana, Apud Balthasarum et Ioannem Moretos Fratres, 1618 (=1607)/ 1607, 2 parts, (16),212,(3); (16),213,(2) p., each part with engraved title page, one unnumbered plate (identical) and 50 numbered engraved plates, each with caption in Latin, Dutch and French. Preface of part 1 with pasted title, somewhat smaller in size and added to binding separately (= from other copy). Only these first 16 pages are 2nd edition, the rest is first edition from 1607: last page with printer's address and date M.DC.VII, the same page in the 2nd edition reads M.DC.XVII [sic]. The second part of our copy has its own title page dated 1607. Two wonderful series of 50 engravings by Theodoor Galle.
