[Binding for François II, dauphin and King of France] Tractatus de beneficio

Perspicacissimi iuris vtriusque lumini ac monarche domini Joannis de Selua. Lyon, apud Scipionem & fratres de Gabiano sub signo fontis, 1539, CCXC,(18) leafs, title page printed in red and black with woodcut frame and printer's device (fountain), woodcut initials, bound in contemporary leather, in the centre of both boards the gilt owner's mark of François II.

Tear in title page covered with tape; a few contemporary notes in the margin, the title page with intriguing 17th century owner's notes. Rebacked using another (old) binding and new endpapers. Very rare edition, the first of this work by Jean de Selve (1475-1529) appeared in 1504. Bindings with the arms of the French dauphin and later King François II (1544-1560, son of Catharina de Medici and Henry II, King consort of Scotland and husband to Mary, Queen of Scots) , who died at an early age, are also very rare. A nearly exact match (but mirrored) can be found at: http://bibliophilie.blogspot.nl/2014_09_01_archive.html.
