Volume 2 contains chapters on the missions to Malakka and Batavia, report of travels, encounters and operations in several Chinese provinces and concludes with a chapter on needs for the Chinese Mission. The pages 299 and following of the second volume contain very interesting lists of books printed in Canton, Malacca , Batavia, Penang and Singapore , mostly mentioning the amount of printed copies. Medhurst was an educated book printer and printed books on his own lithographic printing press in Batavia, including his English - Japanese dictionary (1830) .
