PASSED

[The travels of Cornelis de Bruyn] Voyage au Levant,

(III-V). Paris/Rouen, J.B.C. Bauche/C. Ferrand & R. Machuel, 1725, 5 vols., with engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, 5 folding engraved maps and numerous illustrations on 85 (folding) engraved plates, contemporary uniform marbled calf leather with gilt, ribbed back and blue marbled edges, 4to.

Vol. 4 is partly somewhat waterstained, leaf F3 from vol. 5 is torn; bindings with various signs of use. Good set. The description in Picarta reports 5 maps and 84 plates. Our copy lacks the plate index (2 p.) as do several other copies we found. Understandable, for that index (viewed in a digitised copy online) brings mostly confusion! Furthermore, all illustrations mention the page numbers to which they refer, the binder of our copy has bound the plates in the place mentioned on the first illustration of every plate. The first Dutch edition appeared in 1698. Our edition is a new edition of the French translation (orig. publ. Delft 1700), plates reduced, text edited and changed by Antoine Banier.
