[Copy of Karel van den Bosch] Monumenta illustrium virorum, et elogia

Cura ac studio Marci Zuerii Boxhornii. Amsterdam, J. Janssonius, 1638, 176,(4 index) p., with engraved title page and 125 full-page engravings; 87 engraved illustrations numbered 1-87 and 38 plates numbered 88-125, decorative woodcut initials, contemporary parchment, 4to.

Comparing this copy to a copy digitised by Google, we found this copy lacks the letterpress dedication page and a leaf with only the letterpress words "Plausus Symbolicus" at the end. This is the case with several copies we found. Else a good copy with here and there small defects: title page with misprint on slightly torn fold and stamp of the Societatus Jesu, Lyon; lacks ties. Extraordinary copy with owner's mark in pen of Karel van den Bosch (1697-1665) on free endpaper: "Soc. Jesu Brug Illm. Carolus van den Bosch (...) Gand". This Karel van den Bosch was the ninth bishop of Bruges from 1651 to 1660 and then became the eighth bishop of Ghent until his death. Van den Bosch was a bibliophile and possessed an exhaustive library. In his will he gifted his book possessions to the Jesuits in Bruges. See: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_van_den_Bosch. In 1574 this series of engravings of shrines and epitaphs of famous men (engraved by Tobias Fendt) appeared for the first time. The series was reprinted several times with original plates, this is the first edition with text by Boxhorn (1602-1653).
