[Chinese art] Original glass painting

Probably early 19th-century, possibly even 18th-century work. 54 x 85 cm (print); 61 x 92 cm (frame). Landscape painting with various characters, hunting game. Artist unknown, in heavy frame.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, Chinese glass paintings were produced in and around Guangzhou for export to the West, where they were immensely popular, especially in England. The earliest copies - from 1750 - depicts mainly landscapes with a number of characters (as in the current copy) and were used as mantle pieces, for example. Often the required glass was imported from the West, as this glass was thicker than Chinese-made glass. In wooden frame.
