George van Raemdonck (1888-1966) studies at the Koninklijke Academie der Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen from the age of 15. Due to the outbreak of the Great War, he flees with his family to the Netherlands in 1914. Here, he soon starts to draw political prints for weekly magazine De Groene Amsterdammer. During that time he becomes acquainted with writer A.M. de Jong. Together they work on many projects, including the popular Bulletje en Boonestaak. In 1920, Van Raemdonck left Groene Amsterdammer for political-satirical magazine De Notenkraker. George van Raemdonck is the first Flemish comic artist.
