Scrapbook with more than 1000 chromolithographic or handcoloured illustrations,

ca. 1850, with 50 double-sided leaves (final leaf on one side) and 22 blank leaves of very thick laid paper, with thin paper sheets (here and there lacking), contemporary half morocco, large 4to (30 x 25.5 x 6 cm.).

Top hinge torn, corners bumped, content very good. Beautiful scrapbook with a large number of subjects and many large illustrations (some across multiple pages), several gold-heightened, some uncoloured, incl. costumes, birds and other animals (incl. cats and a dodo), children playing, fruit, country scenes, trains, ships and romantic scenes. Most eye-catching are a very large illustration of a monkey feeding a cat (35.5 x 26 cm.!), 3 friezeshaped illustrations of early trains (each 7.5 x 38 cm.), an oval plate with title pasted along (altogether across the entire page) "IJs-club, Hardrijderij op schaatsen door mannen en vrouwen te Leeuwarden, op donderdag den 22 Februarij 1855, 's morgens precies ten tien ure (...) " and a large illustration of a burning house with many firefighters and fire trucks (17.5 x 29 cm.).
