Utrecht, J. van Poolsum, 1690, (16),624 p., with engraved frontispiece by Jan Luyken (image of a mathematics classroom) and many finished mathematical problems, contemporary vellum, small 8vo.

Occ. mild staining/ foxing, endpapers loose from boards, but a very good copy from the library of L.S.D. Steenveld (Amsterdam), with his blind stamp in the title pag. Bierens de Haan 978, note; Muller 1036; Waller 430; Van Eeghen-Van der Kellen p. 186, no. 175. Rare, completely revised and extended edition of Coutereel's mathematics study book. Van Poolsum explains in the preface how this new edition is much needed: teachers turned against the book by Coutereels, because even though the book provided the solutions to its mathematical problems, it did not show how these solutions were reached. To their embarrassment, teachers were sometimes unable to explain the material to students. This heavily revised edition explains the mathematical problems very well and adapts these to its day, which was necessary as most examples are directly related to trade and commerce.
