Piet Wijn (1929-2010)

The dragon in the cave. Watercolour, 1996. Remarkable in size (as far as we can trace the largest size ever drawn by Piet Wijn). 71 x 50 cm. Framed in mount.

Piet Wijn painted this work on commission. It took some 8 years before it could be shipped to the client: Piet Wijn suffered a stroke; this event and subsequent revalidation caused the work to be made with his left hand - in a larger size. It was painted in sepia after a suggestion from his wife (the original proposition was A3-size and in b/w). The work is reminiscent of the cave scene of Douwe Dabbert and the dragon in Het Monster van het Mistmeer. Wijn's talent and perseverance really shine through in this majestic work. It took him only a few years to teach his left hand what his right hand used to paint. Unfortunately, this new run came to an end as well: shortly after the painting was finished, Piet Wijn again suffered a stroke which forced him to quit working.
