Book of hours in Dutch, Haarlem 1470-1480.

Book of hours, Haarlem, c. 1470/1480, manuscript in Dutch with (18 calendar),307,(3 blank) pages on vellum (paginated in later hand), with 7 pages with large initials profusely illustrated with blue and red penwork and surrounded by decorated borders (occ. heightened with gold), 24 small initials decorated with penwork, several short pieces of text in red, also many red and blue initials, bound in 17th-century blindstamped vellum with (partly faded) manuscript title "Getydeboe(c) M.S." on spine, 17 x 12 x 5 cm.

Two leaves of the calendar at the beginning, and the second to last leaf of the book block partly replaced with blank affixed strip in blank bottom margin. Occ. soiled. staining (esp. at the end), in some places the ink has somewhat run off. Else in very good condition and in an attractive binding, a desirable book of hours. With reference on inlaid descriptive strip: "Lit. L'Art en Hollande au temps de David et Philippe de Bourgogne: trésors du musée national Het Catharijneconvent à Utrecht. Zwolle 1994. Cat. l'Exposition p. 49, No 6. Livre d'heures de Haarlem 1470/80". With the following composition: (1) Complete calendar of saints (18 p.); (2) "Hier beghinen onse vrouwe ghetiden" (p. 1-56); (3) "Hier beghinen die eeuwige wijsheit ghetiden" (p. 57-90); (4) "Hier beghinen die lanarius ghetiden (p. 91-126); (5) "Hier beghinen die heilighe gheest ghetiden" (p. 127-154); (6) "Hier beghinen alre heilighe ghetiden" (p. 155-192); (7) "Hier beghinen die seven psalmen" (p. 193-220); (8) "Hier beghint die vigeli Invatio" (p. 221-306). On the final two written pages an additional part in contemporary handwriting, probably by the original owner.
