[Utrecht] Nieuweroord

Folio (33 x 40 cm.) album in halfleather of Nieuweroord, c. 1900. With 14 photos of the house, interior and park by photographer Carl Emil Mögle, Rotterdam. Photos each 17 x 22 cm.

*Probably built in the 17th century, from 1850 the house and the plot of land became the possessions of F.H.C. baron van Heeckeren van Brandsenburg and received a park design by J.D. Zocher jr. From around 1870, the new owner was Frederik s'Jacob, director-general of the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen. That year, Hoofdgebouw I of the railroads was built on the northeastern part, followed in 1894 by Hoofdgebouw II. After the death of s'Jacob in 1901, the municipality of Utrecht purchased the gardens and turned them into a public park after a design by Utrecht park overseer J.J. Denier van der Gon. The part east of the Hoofdgebouwen formed the Moreelsepark. The house ended up in the hands of Staatsbosbeheer which used it as a museum. In 1918 it had to make way for the largest brick building of the Netherlands, the 'Inkpot', the main administrative building of the railroads.
