The rare first edition of the famous, encyclopedic "Deutsche Academie" by Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688), painter, engraver, art historian and art collector. Possibly the most important baroque art-historical work, all the same one of the most profusely illustrated works on art ever published. This first edition was most likely issued in installments, as copies exist with different compositions and contents. Parts of the work were reissued, the complete work was expanded and reissued in 1768-1775. The first volume contains the chapters Architectura and Sculptura (with consecutive paging) and most extensively the Pictura, followed by the biography of Von Sandrart. The second volume, too, consists of the chapters Architectura, Sculptura and Pictura, followed by Ovid's Metamorphoses (unillustrated) in German translation after Karel van Mander.
