[Copy of Constantijn Huygens] Titi Petronii Arbitri (...) Satyricon.

Johannes Boschius ad scriptorum exemplarium fidem castigavit & notas adjecit. Amsterdam, A. Gaasbeek, 1676-1677, (24),384; 62 [Priapeia]; 68 [Notae] p., with 2 engraved frontispieces, 19th-century gilt-lettered red morocco, 24mo (9 x 5.5 x 3.5 cm.).

With 19th-century blind stamp of Auguste Dufour to the title page and his signature in pen to the title page of the Priapeia. Outer corners of boards trifle bumped. Exceptional copy in several ways: from the library of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), with his owner's mark "Constanter don. aut. 1677" in pen to the title page. "Constantijn Huygens had de gewoonte op de titelpagina's van zijn boeken zijn motto 'Constanter' te schrijven, volgens sommigen om zijn boeken te kunnen onderscheiden van die van de Prins van Oranje, wiens bibliothecaris hij was." (KB). This rare small pocketbook was given to him by the editor Johannes Boschius, who also wrote in pen a dedication on the blank facing the title page: "Nobili & illustri Constantino Hugenio Zulichemi etc. domino, literarum cultori, literarum maecenati, debita observantia offert Jh. Boschius". The library of Constantijn Huygens was auctioned off by Abraham Troyel at The Hague, on 15 March 1688. The catalogue is available online, this book is not mentioned there. No suprise, as Constantijn's sons kept part of the books for themselves. The book is also not mentioned in the auction catalogue of Constantijn Huygens Junior, from 1701. But the book almost certainly does appear in the auction catalogue available online of the library of Christiaan Huygens, which was auctioned off from 24 October 1695: Page 52, Libri Miscellanei in Duodecimo, no. 154: "Titi Petronii Arbitri Satyricon" ("En veau"), undated, therefore no 100% certainty. See for the contents of the auction catalogues: https://tinyurl.com/y3lrpasv (Constantijn) and https://tinyurl.com/y2mzakre (Christiaan).
