[Brazil. Small Barlaeus] Casparis Barlaei, rerum per octennium in Brasilia.

Et alibi gestarum, sub praefectura illustrissimi comitis I. Mauritii Nassauiae&c. comitis, historia. Editio secunda. Cui accesserunt Gulielmi Pisonis Medici Amstelaedamensis tractatus (...). Cleves, Tobias Silberling, 1660, (12),664,(21),(3 blank) p., with the following engravings: title, portrait of Maurice by C. van Dalen after G. Flinck, Maurice's coat of arms, 3 folding maps of South America/ Africa, of Brazil and of the coast near Mauritiopolis, 5 folding views, contemporary vellum with later morocco letterpiece, small 8vo.

The plate of the eclipse (normally bound facing p. 330) lacks as so very often, e.g. as with 2 digitised copies online. Perhaps the plate was added to later printings of this second edition. Else a very good copy, with bookplate of the famous book collector John Carter Brown (1797-1874) to inside front board and his stamp to the reverse of the portrait. Also with bookplate of M. Pimenta Camargo to flyleaf. Borba de Moraes, p. 78-79; Bosch 127; JCB III, p. 26; Rodrigues 346; Sabin 3409. The first edition of this classic on the Dutch in Brazil appeared in folio at Blaeu in Amsterdam, in 1647. In our second edition, the so-called "Kleine Barlaeus", the main text is followed by 4 treatises by the physician Willem Piso (1611-1678), on climate, water, medicinal plants, sugar cane, wild honey and cassava.
