Leonard Baskin (1922-2000). MOKOMAKI

Portfolio and book in slipcase. The book (Ermite Press, Leeds, Mass., 1987, bound by Gray Parrot, edition of 50 copies) comprises the artist's copy with etchings of shrunken and tatooed Maori heads and three poems by Ted Hughes. Folio, vellum, title on spine in gilt stamping and gold-coloured mask on front board. 13 etchings on different types of paper with various sizes and colours. Engraved, coloured and signed frontispiece, title in print, 3 poems, half title in print, 13 etchings (each with blotter), each in a different etching technique and all signed by Baskin. Colophon partly in print and partly in ms., signed and date 1987. The second unique part comprises an added cardboard portfolio [1986] with cased wrappers containing an essay (2 p.) in the artist's handwriting on his initial discovery of this subject. Also 5 original watercolour drawings, 12 "touched-proofs" on vellum, 14 "trial-proofs" and 7 leaves with typographical designs. All leaves signed. The ensemble in a custom-made slipcase [1985] with title and date on spine in gilt stamping.
