[Map of South Holland on cloth] Hollande méridionale,

divisée en arrondissemens et cantons de justice de paix. Engraved map with brightly coloured outlines by Cornelis van Baarsel (1761-1826) and his son Willem Cornelis van Baarsel (1791-1854), The Hague, F.J. Weygand, 1838, 48 x 57 cm., printed on cloth, below the map itself the legend and in upper left corner an attractively engraved title cartouche, folded in the original slipcase with chemise and title label on front, 12.5 x 10 cm (slipcase toned).

Koeman, 3, 189 (Wey 5) (7). Very rare, especially copies printed on cloth. Weygand's "Atlas du Royaume des Pays-Bas", to which this map belonged according to a caption, appeared in 1840. The province of Holland was officially divided into North and South Holland that year, the present map precedes that decision. Koeman called the engravers van Baarsel senior and junior "The most excellent map-engravers of the first decades of the 19th century in the Netherlands" (Koeman I, p. 51).
