Vol. 2 partly w. brown stain in upper margin. Paper over spine splitting/ sl. worn and faded. A good, untrimmed copy. Buisman 2125. Very rare. (2) Jean-François Marmontel. Belisarius. Naar het Fransche van den heere Marmontel (...). Met printverbeeldingen. Amst., P. Meijer, 1768, (14),324,(4 publisher's cat.) p., with engr. frontisp. and 3 plates, contemp. half calf, gilt and ribbed spine w. mor. letterpiece, sm. 8vo (fine copy). Buisman 1556; Scheepers II, 652. The first Dutch edition. The first French edition was published in 1767. The book was an immediate international succes, but in the Netherlands it led to the so-called "Sokratische oorlog". It is a plea for (religious) tolerance towards dissenters, with the Roman warlord Belisarius as main character. This plea was considered unacceptable from orthodox side. (3) (Francis Booke). Waterst. and w. tiny wormholes in lower margin at the end, but an attractively bound copy. (total 3 works in 4 vols.)
