Vol. 2 partly w. brown stain in upper margin. Paper over spine splitting/ sl. worn and faded. A good, untrimmed copy. Buisman 2125. Very rare. (2) Jean-François Marmontel. Belisarius. The first Dutch edition. The first French edition was published in 1767. The book was an immediate international succes, but in the Netherlands it led to the so-called "Sokratische oorlog". It is a plea for (religious) tolerance towards dissenters, with the Roman warlord Belisarius as main character. This plea was considered unacceptable from orthodox side. (3) (Francis Booke).
