Upper pastedown, first free endpaper, title and leaf A2 with library/ owner's stamps and sl. dam. in lower blank outer corner. Paper cover spine and boards (partly) lacking. Very rare edition, only 2 copies in OCLC. The first edition of this translation appeared in 1787, the same year as the original French edition. Jean Henri Latude (1725-1805), famous for his very long imprisonment in various prisons (among them the Bastille), and for a number of clever escapes from those prisons. During the French revolution, he was rehabilitated and compensated with a pension and with a fine of 60000 francs that Madame de Pompadour had to pay him. He died a very wealthy and famous man.
