Architecture, peinture et sculpture de la maison de ville d'Amsterdam,

representée en CIX figures en taille douce (...). Amsterdam, D. Mortier, 1719, 22 p. explanation with 109 engraved plates, part (large) folding, double-page or with multiple separately engraved illustrations on one leaf, contemporary calf with gilt, ribbed back, folio.

Rather tanned through and through; one plate with large tear, here and there smaller tears, a water stain on the endpaper and a few smaller defects. Leather across top hinge split and one corner of the slightly stained front board expertly restored. Despite these defects a good copy with the ex libris of Vincent van Gogh (1866-1911) etched by Marius Bauer on the inside of the front board. His beautiful print collection and library was sold at various auctions from 1911 to 1918. According Herman de la Fontaine Verwey, this was one of the most extraordinary book collections ever collected in the Netherlands. On this bibliophile, see: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_boe022198701_01/_boe022198701_01_0002.php. The standard work on the architecture of Jacob van Campen and the artwork by Hubertus and Artus Quellinus of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam, with engravings of all facades, plans of the entire building and the central hall, interior views and all of the sculptures. The huge plates of the tympana in particular are impressive with their width of almost 170 cm. Earlier editions appeared in 1665/ 1668; after our edition, the series was published several times more during the 18th century.
