Masonic medal
Medal commemorating the 50th anniversary of Loge La Vertu in Leiden as well as the gunpowder explosion in that city*. On the front Death threatening from behind a masonic altar, halted by a hand from the clouds. In the background the partly destroyed city. On reverse a poem in Latin in honour of the king. Leiden, 1809. Size 47 x 38 mm. Gilded silver. Oval.
*Issues by the lodge which did a lot of work after the disaster in Leiden. The king (Louis Napoleon) received a golden copy of the coin. This is one of only 48 copies wrought in gilded silver in good condition.
