[History] Lieuwe van Aitzema. Saken van staet en orlogh

in, ende omtrent de Vereenigde Nederlanden, beginnende met het Jaer 1621 (...) ende eyndigende met begin van 't Jaer 1669. The Hague, J. Vely, J. Tongerloo and J. Doll, 1669-1672, 6 parts in 7 volumes, with engraved frontispiece and engraved portrait in the first part, contemporary uniform blindstamped vellum, backs with raised bands with title in ink, with ties, folio.

Frontispiece cut slightly short. With easily solvable defects to bindings: several ties lacking, loose or slightly worn; pastedowns loose from boards (vellum here and there slightly curled around) and backstrip of volume III partly tender. A lovely, complete set, the second volume with stamp Noortheij on title page, probably Genootschap Noorthey. Lieuwe van Aitzema (1600-1669) was a Dutch duplomat, historian, spy for England during the First and Second Anglo-Dutch Wars, bon vivant and libertine. Because Van Aitzema included a large number of official documents in his works and supplied them with commentary, they are still of great importance to present-day historians. Cleverness and sarcasm make his style intriguing and vivacious. (Wikipedia). The seventh volume with the second part of part 6 contains two publications previously published separately, Verhael van de Nederlandsche vrede-handeling and Herstelde leeuw, ofte discours over het gepasseerde in de Vereenichde Nederlanden, in 't jaer 1650 ende 1651.
