Two extremely rare works: (1) Kermisvermakelijkheden
of opmerkingen van een schoolknaap op de Utrechtsche kermis. Een prentgeschenk voor de jeugd. Dordrecht, H. Lagerweij, 1844, 20 p., with woodcut title vignette and 8 lithographed plates, original wrapper with letterpress title on front cover and (in very small type) on spine.
Besides a few small stains a remarkably good copy, especially for such a fragile publication. With owner's name dated "Haarlem 1849" in pen on the inside of the front cover. This first owner covered the book in a letterpress New Year's sheet with "jaarzang" to the Broederschap van de Aloude Rhetorijkamer te Haarlem "op den eerste dag van 't jaar 1846." It is due to this careful covering that the book has been preserved so well. Only one copy in PiCarta (KB). Contains: De oude poedel; Het hondenspel; De geleerde haas; De verstandige of kunst ezel; De schrandere hond; Het paardenspel; Vervolg van het paardenspel; Het beestenspel.
With: (2) Het leven van Jan Klaasen. Eene oude vertelling. Op rijm gebragt voor kinderen. Amsterdam, B. Lenfring, n.d. (ca. 1865), 8 p., with woodcut title vignette and 8 hand-coloured illustrations on 4 plates, original printed cordbound wrapper with serial number "13". Pages 7/8 with light damage, else a used/soiled copy, cover torn to spine, with owner's name on the reverse of the first plate. This first (?) owner covered the book and on the cover wrote initials "E.M." and date "1869". On the back wrapper a list with 36 books of the series in which this book is listed as number 13. All of these books are now untraceable, as with this title no copies in PiCarta (total 2).
