Besides a crossed-out owner's name in ballpoint on the free endpaper a very good copy, with printed school prize filled out by hand of the Haarlem department of the Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen for Josina Bohn, dated 29 April 1807. With lovely remarks on the publication by the author (Voor-reden) and by the Dutch publisher (Bericht). The work presents the then-current idea of learning through play as the best learning method for children, with the old philosopher Philander as the teacher to 6 boys and 6 girls. Philander has them read books as starting point for an introduction to the natural sciences, cosmography, geography etc. Rare, only two copies in PiCarta, in which no first edition appears.
With: (2) Belisarius. Naar het Fransche van den Heere Marmontel. Met printverbeeldingen. Derde druk. Amsterdam, P. Meijer, 1769, (32),324,(4) p. with 4 engraved plates after H. Gravelot, contemporary half leather, gilt back with morocco title shield, small 8vo. With printed school prize filled out by hand of the The Hague department of the same Maatschappij as above, for Wilhelmina Huguenin, dated 2 November 1805. The first Dutch edition of this publication, highly controversial especially in the Netherlands, appeared in 1768 (total 2).
