Old annotations on endpapers, tear in top hinge. Good copy. Johan Bodecheer Benningh (1606-1642), Northern Dutch poet who also wrote neo-Latin verses. He studied literature at Leiden (1620) and graduated in 1624. There, in 1629 he became professor of ethics, in 1635 in physics. For scientific research he travelled in 1638 to Brazil in the service of the Dutch West India Company. Having gone mad, he returned in 1640 and died in 1642. Bodecheer Benningh corresponded with such men as Cats and Huygens. His Satyricon (1631), a Menippean satire in which he criticised Leiden student morals, caused quite a stir (Van Bork/ Verkruijsse 1985).
