In 1908, Vuvan Thuan and Nguyen Van Truyen (a.k.a cook Han Hien) tried to poison the 4th colonial artillery regiment of the French oppressors in an attempt to capture the fortress of Hanoi for the rebels. The attempt failed and after the perpetrators were captured, it was decided to set a horrific example. Public execution followed - with press access.
