Gabrielle Ferrand (1887-1984). Sketchbook Indonesia

Sketchbook with 39 leaves on which one-sided drawings in pencil (1x coloured with gouache), many drawings (sometimes very extensive) inscriptions in French (several double-sided with mostly text) with in pen on front board "Gabrielle Ferrand" and 1926 and on inside front board in the same hand "G. Ferrand", halfcloth, 26 x 21.5 cm.

Bookblock trifle tender, staples slightly rusty. Exceptional sketchbook, a lovely documentary on mostly ordinary Indonesians, with the detailed inscriptions (e.g. regarding the colours) revealing the intention of the drawings to serve as a foundation for more detailed drawings or paintings. The inscriptions sometimes also consist of translations of Indonesian words or expressions in French or vice versa. Contains subjects such as the Borobodur (temple and landscape e.g. "silhouette de montagne derrière le Baroeboedoer", dated "26-27 juillet - '28"), "Besneidenis" corrected to "Besnijdenis", a volcano, human figure studies, e.g. "pour la main qui tient le Kriss"), "Pendopo", "Groupe marchant de petits femmes, combien? Kreton 16 août 23" and also musicians and dancers, coloured details of clothing motifs, a pirogue with sail etc.
