Monogrammist AD (2nd half 15th century). (Three soldiers talking).
Engraving, leaf 23.4 x 16.5 cm., monogrammed "AD" and dated 1489 in print, with engraved (?) margin line thickened in pen and ink, on (presumably later) paper with a piece of a fleur-de-lys water mark in a coat of arms with contour.
A few vague folds/ mild creasing, yet in remarkably good condition. Intriguing, very rare print. Heller (1831), p. 12., attributed to Albrecht Dürer, with image of exactly the same monogram and date as here, therefore undoubtedly taken from a copy of our print. Nagler (1858), Die Monogrammisten 393 ("unbekannter Meister"), with the monogram copied from Heller but the attribution to Albrecht Dürer convincingly rejected. On Pinterest a copy can be found under the name of Dürer. We follow Nagler.
