Hendrik Freerk Tillema (1870-1952) owned a small business in Semarang named "Hygiena", which produced bottled water, together with his Semarangsche Apotheek. He was obsessed by improving the daily hygiene of the local population, and wrote about the awful living conditions in the city kampongs in books published by himself. He returned to the Netherlands in 1914 and there wrote his most important work "Kromoblanda".
