Volume 1 is missing pages 161-162 and the plate opposite page 38 is separately inserted (originating from another copy); the latter is also the case for the plate opposite page 24 in volume 2. All bindings with small defects in corners and extremities of spines. Rare first edition in the beautiful original bindings.
In 1851 the author was commissioned to inspect Protestant churches and schools in Indonesia, an assignment that lasted the five years referred to on the title page. In doing so he visited Java, Madura, Celebes, the Moluccas (Ternate, Batjan, Banda, Amboina, Haroekoe, Saparoea, Noussalaut, Ceram), Floris, Timor, Banka, Sumatra and Borneo. The plates by C.W. Mieling forms a varied collection of views from the entire archipelago.
