Auctore P. Ioanne David. Antwerp, Ex Officina Plantiniana, Apud Balthasarum et Ioannem Moretos Fratres, 1618 [last leaf volume 1 dated 1617], 2 volumes, (16),212,(3); (16),213,(2) p., with a total of 104 full-page engravings: each volume with engraved title page, one unnumbered plate and 50 numbered engraved plates, each with inscription in Latin, Dutch and French, contemporary calf with gilt, ribbed back.
Very good copy, especially inside; the bottom panel of the back is renewed using a piece of the old backstrip; top hinge torn on top and several other traces of use and small defects to the binding. With special provenance, according to (partly removed) old annotation on inside front cover: "This book belongs to our Cloister called [Nazareth in Bruges]" and an erased stamp on the free endpaper. On this English monastery, see: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engels_Klooster. English canonesses from Leuven established themselves in 1629 in Bruges in "Nazareth", a travellers' house for pilgrims. By 1650 a true monastery existed thanks to the funding by Marc Arrazola de Oñate, alderman and afterwards mayor of Brugse Vrije.
Second edition of these two beautiful print series, with the unnumbered engraving of both volumes signed by Theodorus Galle. The first edition appeared in 1607.
