Borge Ring
Self-portrait. Original pencil sketch. Probably made for Cartoonder magazine, ca. 1953 - and several other sketches including "For the Fun of it. Borge zonder baard", later signed by Ring and a Heer Bommel sketch. (total 5)
Borge Ring, together with fellow new talent Bjorn Frank Jensen, was invited by Marten Toonder in 1952 to work at Toonder Studio's. Together with another Dane, Per Lygum, they formed the 'Denenkamp'. They produced dozens of promotional and instructional films for companies such as Philips and Shell and cartoons such as Hugo and Moonglow. After 1973, he quit his old job to devote himself to new enterprises, together with his wife Joanike Ring. For instance, he contributed to large foreign projects such as the Asterix cartoons, the Smurfs and Lucky Luke, and produced many commissioned cartoons. His own work led to 'Oh my Darling', a 1978 Oscar contender, and 'Ella & Bella', which won the Oscar for best animation in 1985. Ring received the Winsor McCay award for his work in 2011. In 2013, Borge and Joanike's house burned down and thus nearly all the original work, thousands of drawings and letters, was lost. Thanks to research for the book on Ring's animation work (de Kunst van Borge Ring, Jan Willem de Vries, 2015), a suitcase with sketches once lent to a Danish artist unexpectedly came to light. These drawings and those in the following lots are from this suitcase.
