[Architecture] Roger Katan (b. 1931). "Planning with People: Advocacy in East Harlem".
Original documentation materials compiled by Roger Katan, for the publication (as volume Forum XXIII-4) in 1972 at Hilversum, consisting of original letters, diagrams and designs by Katan, a print-out of the French text of the introduction by Françoise Choay with handwritten English translation and an entire series of headers in various sizes (e.g. in red the word "People" as eventually used for the front cover).
See very extensively on the well-known architect Roger Katan and his publications: https://tinyurl.com/m75xnxm. Our archive provides a lovely insight into Katan's methods for the production of his publications. The final publication concerned a text of ca. 40 pages by Katan on his work as "advocate planner" in East Harlem. Also involved with this publication were Tjeerd Deelstra, Anthon Beeke and Swip Stolk, whose names appear in the documentation. The magazine Forum was the "Orgaan van het Genootschap Architectura et Amicitia". We found no available copy to compare this preparatory material with the final publication. Concerns for example: (1) An original photomontage illustration for the book; (2-4) Three letters by Katan to Anthon Beeke, as guidance for and explanation with the other material, incl. a fully finished layout per page for the book (he also praises the Cuban cigars which Beeke introduced to him); (5) A series of 23 drawn diagrams on thin paper with indication of page number; (6) A large series of headers in various sizes with indication of their application in the publication; (7) Short note on piece of cardboard concerning the publication by Tjeerd Deelstra to Anton Beeke.
