[Marten Toonder] Original colouring Henk Dragt

Some 25 years ago, Dragt began colouring the work of Toonder. He did this with an eye for precision, narrative and colour. Often he would spend more than an hour on a single page, in the process covering the tiniest of details. In a correspondence with Toonder, the latter showed his appreciation with the following words: "Hartelijke dank voor uw brief, met de buitengewoon interessante pagina met uw werk. U hebt er inderdaad heel veel tijd aan gegeven; u hebt alle details behandeld, en zelfs de planten op de voorgrond verschillende schakeringen groen gegeven. Het is een prestatie; vooral omdat u heel wat moeilijkheden had op te lossen. De afdruk is eigenlijk te klein, het papier is lang niet ideaal en de arceringen staan vaak de kleur in de weg. U hebt al die bezwaren met veel kleurgevoel weten op te lossen, en ik ben dan ook blij met uw goede recensie van mijn werk. Als iemand het kan beoordelen, bent u het, want u kent ieder lijntje, en daarom stel ik uw oordeel zeer op prijs." In another letter from 1999, Toonder shows a deep appreciation for the colouring of the Opvoedering comics, and does not object to a private publication. A remarkable decision: Toonder was not exactly lenient when it came to publications of his work by third parties. However, Toonder seems partial to seeing his work published as coloured by Dragt. At the same time he remains businesslike and lists practical concerns. A colour-printing is expensive and he does not consider an edition of a few hundred copies profitable. Moreover, a public edition is not possible "omdat ik een vast contract met de Bezige Bij heb" and "zou ik dat alleen zelf kunnen doen omdat ik de tekenaar ben en de copyrights heb".
