8vo, 8 volumes, uniformly bound, half-green morocco, title on spine in brown and gilt stamping, green cloth boards, top edge gilt, light-green endpapers with binder's name. Complete with 4 text vols., 2694 pp. and 4 plate vols. with more than 400 coloured engraving, several of which folding. Bindings very finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, text and plate vols. with occ. mild staining. Lovely and complete set of this 1854 edition.
The bindings by Sangorski & Sutcliffe stem from their early period and are less exuberant than later bindings, for which the company became famous. The coloured plates on superior paper than those in the 1844 edition (privately published). See lot 482. (total 8)
