[Needlework example book] Celestine Cock (19th century)
Probably Belgium, compiled c. 1850 (one example dated 1851), 12 blue cardboard leaves with 27 cloth examples of refined needlework incl. beautiful complete (sets of) doll clothing such as dresses, skirts, hats, blouses, an apron and underwear, all doll-sized, the leaves loose in the original halfcloth portfolio with (illegible) label on front board and remains of ties, 43 x 39 cm.
Two examples of silk are discoloured/ stained but the clothes are else in perfect condition. Portfolio with some wear. The first name of the maker and date 1851 can be found on a small mark strip in the album. On the first leaf can be found a refined piece of embroidery sewn to paper with on reverse in pen: "C. Cock F.N.F." Beautiful collection of handiwork, very rare for its kind. For the larger part in perfect condition due to the careful storage/ presentation. In terms of design, fabrics, materials and motifs and finishing, the fashion of the 1850 period is shown in a highly charming, direct and compact manner. The degree of difficulty varies, which suggests this is the result of a needlework course for girls.
