The first printing appeared in Philadelphia and London, in 1873, titled A practical treatise on the manufacture of paper in all its branches. In this work Carl Hofman, director of the Public Ledger Paper Mills in Elkton, USA, first describes the history of the papermaking industry, then expands on the production of paper with the aid of machines.
