[Haarlem. Heyns] Const-Thoonende juweel. by de loflijcke stadt Haerlem,

[By Zacharias Heyns]. Zwolle, Zacharias Heyns, 1606, (266) leaves printed in various fonts incl. civilité, with engraved title vignette, 13 folding plates on 41 connected leaves and 13 illustrations in the text, 12 p. with woodcut music notation, contemporary turned vellum, both boards with central renaissance medallion, double border and corner fleurons and plane division and title in pen, 4to.

Occ. vaguely waterstained in top margin (incl. the plates), a few quires tanned; Intrede van de "Brabanders van Amsterdam" lacks the letterpress verse below the title (completed with added old paper); Intrede van Haastrecht with minor holes to top margin; several plates incorrectly folded as usual. Copies exist with the leaves of the plates unattached; a copy in PiCarta lists 40 plates of which 38 folding. Our copy therefore contains 41 individual leaves with engravings, not always attached with equal care and therefore occ. lacking (very) small strips. Binding lacks ties and is sl. dented. In all a good copy of this very rare work, with owner's stamp of Constance Ruys to inside front board. Simoni 138; Praz 307; Scheurleer 138; Ekama 59; Moes/ Burger IV, p. 257-261. Splendid work on rhetoric. The Haarlem rederijkerskamer (chambers of rhetoric, dramatic societies) "Trou moet Blijcken" hosted a competition for stage plays and poems related to Christian charity. The most important chambers of rhetoric in the nation competed, such as Leiden, Katwijk, Schiedam, Aedwaertswoude, Vlaardingen, Amsterdam, Noordwijk, Haastrecht, Gouda, The Hague and Ketel. All plates could be connected in order to form one large frieze of the entire parade.
