[Japan. School plates] "Educational pictures from Japanese History".
Set of 1 printed calligraphed title page and 6 chromolithographic school plates, c. 1900, each 47 x 63.5 cm. with text in characters in margins, 4x (of 6) with paper title strip affixed to foot margin, 3 (of 6) thin paper protective sheets with letterpress text in characters (originally affixed to head margin of plates, now fayed/ creased/ damaged) preserved.
The plates rolled up, with tears/ frays/ folds and creasing, therefore sold w.a.f. Fine plates. The four preserved titles are: (1-2) "Nitta Yoshisada. Yoshisada's horse is killed by an arrow, Oyamada Takaigo offers him his horse and lets him escape" (2 copies); (3) "The pass of Hiyodori-goe. Masashibo Benkei charges Nashio Saburo to be his guide over the pass."; (4) "The night-attack of Horikawa. Tosabo Shoskun attacks Yoshitoune at night in his residence at Horikawa". (total 7)
