Ambrotype, 16 x 21 cm., c. 1860, with contemporary frame and in mount, with text on reverse in pen "Hauptmann Bernhard Vittamberg nebst Familien, gestorben den 16ten Mai 1863 im Weltevrede bei Batavia".

Damaged, but still a highly interesting and unusual early photo. On the Hauptmann's costume the epaulettes and buttons have been heightened with gold.
