[Pith paper album] (Various ships)

Series of 12 gouaches on "pith paper", each ± 18 x 29 cm., with silk borders and mounted with corners in contemporary silk album with floral decoration and ties, oblong folio (32.5 x 34 cm).

With the usual small tears/ minor damage (especially to corners), else in good condition; marginal waterstaining to the mounts of the last few plates and to endpapers. Splendid example with relatively large gouaches. With inlaid typed letter concerning the album (and one similar), addressed to the artist Cornelis Gerardus 't Hooft (1866-1936) by Scheltema en Holkema's Boekhandel, dated 1917: "Wy veroorloven ons u mede te deelen, dat wy hebben aan te bieden een uiterst zeldzaam werk, voorstellende verschillende soorten en modellen Japansche en Chineesche zeilschepen en vaartuigen. Deze platen zyn op bizonder fraaie wyze in handschilderwerk op zyde-papier uitgevoerd met zyden omlysting. De geheele bewerking van deze platen in hun schitterende kleuren-combinatie geeft een voornamen indruk, terwyl de artistieke band het effect verhoogt."
