Christiaan Eijkman (1858-1930)

Physician and pathologist Christiaan Eijkman proved together with his colleague Gerrit Grijns that the disease beriberi is caused by insufficient nutrition. This discovery was the basis of the discovery of vitamins, for which Eijkman received the Nobel Prize in 1929.
