Tiny marginal wormtunnels at the beginning and end; vaguely waterstained in margins. Lacks ties; vellum over front cover with cut. Acceptable copy with old owner's entry "Mlle Mondollot" in pen on title p. Part of the text is printed in Hebrew, Arabic or other exotic types. See Fulton, The sovereignty of the sea, p. 369 and 374, and Grotius, Epistolae, nos. 372, 585 and 590. King Jacob I held up the publication of the work, which was written 18 years earlier. Because of the additions to this edition, its import into England was prohibited (April 15, 1636). Our early edition (first: 1635) follows an edition with the address London, Stanesbi for Meighen, 1636, that was actually published in Leiden by B. and A. Elzevier. In 1609, the Elzeviers had also published the inspiration for the Mare Clausum: the famous Mare Liberum by Selden's great adversary Hugo Grotius.
